Dr. Gracia Grindal '65 Retires from Luther Seminary

After 30 years of service, Dr. Gracia Grindal ’65 retired from her position in June as professor of rhetoric at Luther Seminary.聽She has contributed greatly to the Luther community and also to the larger world of church music and hymnody. One of the many lasting contributions Dr. Grindal has made is the annual 鈥淪inging of the Faith鈥 event.

In special honor of Gracia, the annual Singing the Faith Hymn Festival, hosted by the Luther Seminary FRIENDS, was held on October 27 in celebration of the Lutheran Reformation and featured selected hymns and readings. This year, Finnish composer Kari Tikka premiered a new commissioned setting of the Apostles’ Creed.

The Augsburg Choir, under the direction of Peter Hendrickson ’77, was the featured choir for this event. Following the program, those in attendance enjoyed a Finnish-themed Smorgasbord, including lutefisk.

Dedication of the Charles S. Anderson Music Hall

On Friday, September 27,聽 the Augsburg community gathered to dedicate the Charles S. Anderson Music Hall in honor of Augsburg鈥檚 8th president, Charles Anderson, who served as president for 17 years, from 1980聽to 1997.

President Pribbenow welcomed the guests and stated that 鈥渢he legacy of Charles Anderson is very much the foundation for the College鈥檚 work today and in the future. We are honored to recognize him by naming the Charles S. Anderson Music Hall.鈥

College Pastor Sonja Hagander and Associate Pastor Justin Lind-Ayres led family, colleagues, alumni and friends in the blessing of the building.聽 Members of the Augsburg choir and band joined the celebration.

Roz Nordaune 鈥77, Regent Emerita, and Jeff Swenson 鈥79, Athletic Director, paid tribute to Chuck.聽 Jeff described Chuck as a 鈥渟tudent-first decision maker and聽a competitor, who was a confident and compassionate leader.鈥

Roz, who knew Chuck both as a student and a Regent, said, 鈥淗is qualities of accessibility, inclusion of Augsburg鈥檚 constituencies, always open to discussion and debate and a wonderful sense of humor were always evident to me as my involvement with my alma mater evolved over many years.鈥

Kathy Tunheim, Regent Emerita Chair during the tenure of President Anderson, sent a letter and shared, 鈥淐huck was so proud of Augsburg.聽 He believed in the importance of the College鈥檚 work鈥揻or its students and for the world they will serve.聽 He had such confidence in the people who were committed to Augsburg鈥檚 future.聽 He was truly a willing servant leader.”

Kristin Anderson, Augsburg Art Professor and daughter of Charles Anderson, remarked聽that the naming of the Music Hall in honor of her father is especially fitting as music was important to him throughout his life. 鈥淗e understood the many important roles this space could play 鈥 not just for music majors, but for people like him, who were deeply committed to music but who pursued other gifts and professions,鈥 said Kristin.

Augsburg Associates Appoint Three Alumnae to Board

The Augsburg College Associates is a service auxiliary of volunteers whose mission includes fundraising for special projects and scholarships in support of the College. The Associates’ commitment to the College is evident in their ongoing support through fundraising events including estate sales, Velkommen Jul, and the Scandinavian boutique. The funds raised throughout the year support special projects and scholarships.

On Thursday, September 26, the Augsburg Associates Board elected three alumnae to its board.

Emily Crook 鈥07 of Duluth, Minn., graduated from Augsburg College in 2007 with a BA in psychology. While at Augsburg she participated in softball, worked in admissions, and served as an orientation leader welcoming incoming Augsburg students. Emily, a fourth grade elementary teacher, is currently finishing her thesis for her master of arts in education at Augsburg.

Kathleen Gabrielsen 鈥80 is part of an Augsburg family which includes her late husband, Stephen 鈥63, daughter Elizabeth ’89, an artist, and son Joe ’91, a computer programmer. She is a former preschool teacher and is an artist working in jewelry and clay sculpture. Kathleen, who has served on the board for six years before, is joining our board again in appreciation of her husband, 鈥淒r. Gabe.鈥 The Stephen 鈥淕abe鈥 Gabrielsen Memorial Scholarship is being established in 2013 to honor his memory and celebrate his life鈥檚 work.

Olivia 鈥淟ivi鈥 (Bylund) Smith attended Augsburg three years with the class of 鈥64. One of her three children, Heather (Wagner) Rand, is a 1985 Augsburg graduate. Livi was the children鈥檚 librarian in the Cloquet Public Library for 12 years. She has resided in the Cloquet and Duluth areas of Minnesota for the past 37 years.

Thank You to Our Volunteers

Year after year we are consistently amazed by the faithfulness and generosity of our Auggie volunteers. Yet, upon reflection, we understand that Augsburg is the result of selflessness given from one generation to support the next one.

Auggies globally share in learning, living, discovering our gifts, and matching these gifts with the world鈥檚 most important needs. We as Auggies are called to question, to act, to serve our neighbor, and to make an impact.

To ensure that these uniquely Augsburg experiences endure for generations to come, we need support, and our volunteers understand this with exceptional clarity. We owe them a debt of gratitude for the way they deploy their energy and inventiveness in service to our college.

So to all of you volunteers, we extend our sincere thanks and our deep appreciation for everything that you do for the Augsburg community.
