As part of the annual celebration of International Education Week (IEW), Augsburg鈥檚 Study Abroad/Away office (CGEE) recently hosted an invigorating panel discussion that showcased the diverse global and international experiences shaping our campus community.

What is IEW? A joint initiative of the U.S. Departments of State and Education that celebrates the transformative benefits of international exchange worldwide鈥攁 mission perfectly embodied by our panelists!

The dynamic event was hosted by Sarah Morgan, Study Abroad and Away Advisor (CGEE), and featured six remarkable panelists: four current Augsburg students (including two international students) and two distinguished faculty members. Each shared their unique, powerful insights into how global experiences have fundamentally shaped their worldview and helped them develop an invaluable sense of community.

Meet the Panel of Global Auggies

The panel was rich with perspectives from students who traveled abroad and international students who brought the world to Augsburg:

  • Everlyn Balvoa-Granda: An Augsburg student who gained hands-on experience by studying and interning abroad through CGEE鈥檚 program in .
  • Aidan Wippich: An Augsburg student who broadened their academic horizons on an exchange program at .
  • Yan Urrizalqui: A current international student from Spain, sharing her experience navigating life and academics in the U.S., and feeling welcomed by the Augsburg staff immediately upon arrival.听
  • Tommy Maritan: A current international student from Italy, who offered his perspective on studying at Augsburg, and his experiences making friends in Minneapolis and connecting with staff and faculty to feel welcomed.听

Faculty: Bridging Global Gaps

Adding another layer of compelling experience, two faculty members reflected on their own journeys that started as international students in the U.S., demonstrating how their backgrounds enrich the classroom today:

  • Bernardo Andrade: Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Augsburg, who grew up in Brazil before coming to the United States as an international student.
  • Jayoung Koo: Associate Professor of Marketing at Augsburg, who grew up in South Korea before embarking on her journey to the United States as an international student.

The panel was a testament to the powerful exchange of ideas and the creation of community that happens when the world meets at Augsburg!

Gracie Award-winning Cuban journalist Liz Oliva Fern谩ndez will visit 海角社区 to present a new documentary film, Cuba in the Crosswinds [working title], produced by the independent media outlet, Belly of the Beast. This is an event for all 海角社区 faculty, staff, and students, with CGEE鈥檚 Global Faculty member from Namibia, Pinias Kashedi.

The Augsburg community is invited to join CGEE in welcoming Pinias Kashedi, Global Faculty from Namibia, on campus! He will be hosting a talk about the marginalization of youth in Southern Africa, titled, “Education Capture and Youth Marginalization in Namibia.” A brief description is below:

Using an historic perspective on Namibia, the speaker will discuss the development of education from colonialism and through apartheid. The unemployment rate in Namibia is one of highest within Africa, at 41%. Economic opportunities for young people are less compared to employed adults. There is also a very low youth representation in leadership and decision making structures. Most Namibian youth believe that political activism does not yield results. There are close to 90,000 unemployed graduates, some with graduate education qualifications, in a country with a total population around 2.5 million. Colonial and social injustice are a factor to these issues, but also an inherited education system which perpetuates economic and social marginalization of young people. What, if anything, is the Namibian government doing to address the issues? Mr. Kashedi will discuss all of this and much more at this invigorating global lecture!
We will conclude the talk with a meet and greet with our colleague Pinias for you to get to know him better and welcome him to the 海角社区 community.
  • When: Wednesday, September 20th
  • Time: 3:40 p.m.
  • Where: OGC 100

ALL are welcome to attend!

He further holds a Post-graduate Diploma in Business Administration and a Bachelors of Education from the University of Namibia.

Pinias worked for the Namibian Government as a Voter Education as well as leading Adult and Continuing Education programs at district level. Prior to joining the Augsburg CGEE team in Namibia in the fall of 2021, he worked for the US Embassy as the Cultural Affairs assistant and EducationUSA adviser managing and coordinating youth and professional exchange programs and educational advising for international students planning to study in the US. Staff photo of Nigel GlennyNigel Glenny is the Site Director for Augsburg CGEE Northern Ireland and a Lecturer with the International Conflict Research Institute (INCORE) at Ulster University. He is a graduate of Queen鈥檚 University Belfast with a First Class Honours Degree in Education (Religious Studies and History). He began his career as a history teacher then moved into local government as an Education Officer, where he designed and taught a wide range of 听experiential learning programs for schools, colleges, youth, and community groups. Much of this work utilized elements of Irish cultural traditions to foster cross-community contact between Protestant and Catholic groups from divided communities within Northern Ireland. Nigel then worked several years at a leading non-governmental organization (NGO) engaged in peace and capacity-building initiatives throughout the island of Ireland. At that organization, he developed an International Citizenship Action Project that reached across communities in Northern Ireland, across the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, and across the Atlantic to the United States. He created peace and reconciliation curriculum, led programs in how to facilitate student engagement, and trained teachers and youth workers throughout Ireland and the United States. Following his position with the International Citizenship Action Project, Nigel came to Ulster University, first serving as a Lecturer with its School of Education and the UNESCO Centre.

Prior to its transition to Augsburg CGEE, the (formerly known as Democracy and Social Change in Northern Ireland) was delivered through the Higher Education Consortium for Urban Affairs (HECUA), with the first group of students participating in 2002.

The Center for Global Education and Experience (CGEE) is excited to introduce a brand-new two-week summer program for Augsburg students, created in collaboration with Augsburg鈥檚 Pan-Afrikan Center. The pilot program, Anti-Apartheid and Black Lives Matter: Global Movements for Racial Justice, will run May 17 鈥 28, 2021.

Global Movements for Racial Justice was created in response to the racially motivated murder of George Floyd in our home city of Minneapolis. With much of CGEE鈥檚 work typically focusing on global settings, it became clear in the summer of 2020 that we should use our pedagogy and unique programming style to shed light on the inequities and injustices within our own backyard and in communities across the United States.

The coming together of CGEE Southern Africa with Augsburg鈥檚 Pan-Afrikan Center, will educate students to compare and contrast the U.S. civil rights movement with the South Africans’ struggle to overturn apartheid.听 Students will then take this historical context and apply it, with a critical lens, to contemporary movements for racial justice.听 Minneapolis, in the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder, will be the focal point of their examination.

This program would not have been possible without the tremendous effort and work put into it by the instructors, Azania Tripp, Director of Pan-Afrikan Student Services and Albertina Shifotoka, Director of CGEE Southern Africa, in addition to Peggy Johnson, Director of Customized Education Abroad & Study Away Programs. We thank them all for their dedication to rising to the moment to create bold programming for Augsburg鈥檚 next generation of leaders.

Interested students should apply by March 25. A brief program description is included below, for more details on application, cost, and itinerary.听听

Program participants will critically analyze the global racial unrest movements of the Southern Africa Anti-Apartheid system, and the racially motivated murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis. This 2-week program experience will introduce students to the understanding of how these movements became historical events and impacted policy and the visibilities on racial inequities that impact the Pan-Afrikan diaspora and all BIPOC communities.
